This week's Portion is rightly named, 'Because' as it does appear to contain a lot of 'if you will, then I will' statements. Conditions are being laid out for the newly formed nation for how they are to live in the land they are about to posses but there are some things which really struck me that I want to share here today. Let's take a closer look.
The verse in Deut 8:3 probably sounds familiar even to those who only read the new testament Scriptures. That would be because Christ, Yeshua, quoted them in Matthew 4:4 which states, "But He replied, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”" I have heard it quoted more than once, but never really took the time to look at what it could really be saying, until now. Moses was reminding them of the 'bread from heaven' which was used to test their hearts for obedience (Exodus 16:4) in the wilderness. It's important to note, this bread was not produced by human effort, it was simply given to them. Much later we find in John 6:51 Yeshua says "𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻". So if He is reminding them of the manna, could He also be reminding them of how the manna was sent to test their hearts for obedience? Was He doing the same? Follow me for a moment - if you think about it, Yeshua is the Bread of Life - yet we are told that we do not live by bread alone, but by EVERY WORD that proceeds from the mouth of GOD, and in context that is referencing the Torah - His commandments, statutes and judgements. Hmmm. We are told in Leviticus 18:5 (and reminded in Galatians 3:12, Romans 10:5), "𝘚𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘔𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘺 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺; 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘖𝘙𝘋."
But this is even more beautiful because in Romans 10:4, we learn how Yeshua and Torah are connected - "𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 [𝗮]𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴." Notice the 'footnote' connected to the word 'end' in this verse. The footnote shows that the word for end is 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹. Think about that for a moment. Christ is the GOAL of Torah. Meaning 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝘄𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁! It is indeed a TEACHER (Gal 3:24) if we follow 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵. Shew! But let's continue - so we don't live by 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. So the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 of GOD which again, is tied to Yeshua. John 1:1 says, "𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙂𝙤𝙙." He was the WORD made flesh! And what did Yeshua speak / teach / walk? You guessed it, TORAH. In it's proper context - without the man-made traditions/doctrine that had been long laid on top of it. He showed us 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 and by His death, burial and resurrection, He made it so we 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲!! Death lost it's sting!! (1 Cor 15) WOW!
I don't want to negate one important note to the verses I have shared today - before Israel was fed the manna, it says the LORD 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙙 them. Later we see Israel being told to "𝙘𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙢𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩", which is in essence saying, 'humble yourself'. You see our fleshly nature doesn't want to 𝙩𝒓𝙪𝒍𝙮 𝙝𝒆𝙖𝒓 the Word of GOD. 1 Cor 2:14 says, "𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗺; 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 [𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱]." Ouch! Guilty as charged. For a very long time I refused to believe what I was hearing was truth, in regards to Torah and its applicability for our lives today. But GOD. In His great mercy He continued to prod me with questions until one day I finally humbled myself before Him and simply said, 'Show me'. I opened my heart up to actually listen and examine! And I was blown away. I say that to say, if you feel Him pricking your spirit about HIS Sabbath or any of His other commands, please don't harden your heart. Humble it. He wants so much for you to hear His WORD and by faith in the Bread of Life, begin to walk them out. Salvation is free - sanctification isn't! I can't help but praise Him for continuing to work on me!!
Which leads me to the final piece I will share today from this week's Portion. I have been wresting with the LORD in 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩 issues. Honestly, for as long as I can remember, to a degree at least. Trauma can do that to a person. Since I retired and we have been talking about hubby retiring, too, I have been finding myself worried about 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝. I am sure some of you can relate to my madness, in trying to prep, prep, prep for every possible outcome, not really leaving any room for the miracles of manna. Sigh. The LORD, through a commentator this week, showed me my folly. You see, Israel came from Egypt, where they had to sow their seed and water it manually. Egypt is dry - with just the rivers to fetch water or to funnel to the city. So while Israel worked the land, they came to 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴. But now, as they are entering the Promised Land, they are told they must depend on the LORD to send the rain. And He points out He does so based on their obedience. No longer would they be able to 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 on their own - oh no, they must depend on the word of the LORD and the Bread of Heaven to be freely given, if they are humbled in heart and ready to receive it. I know He was speaking to me. I had become so dependent on myself and my husband to provide, that I forgot those provisions were only there because the LORD enabled it to begin with. And friends, I would much rather have the Provider than the provisions!! At least, I am learning to. I am convicted of how 'dependent' I have become on a system created by man, never realizing it was robbing me of one of the greatest gifts of this life - Time. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳-𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯! (Matt 6:34)
As I am learning more and more, one thing is for sure. Faith is required. We place it in things all the time, the problem comes when it's the wrong thing. We must evaluate our hearts and minds continually for Truth. And friends, His Word is Truth. It's time to dig in! Bread satisfies, but when added with the WORD, it satiates! To the full! To Him belongs the glory, forever and ever, Amen!!
